Car processing - the art of shooting actors inside a moving vehicle has always been one of production's most logistically demanding setups. Traditional solutions involve towing rigs, process trailers, and location days exposed to weather, traffic, and the limits of practical lighting. Virtual production changes the equation entirely.
By using an LED volume around a stationary vehicle, a production can simulate any road, any country, any time of day - with the plates on the wall responding in real time to the camera. The car never moves. The world does.
Car processing in virtual production uses an LED volume - a large curved or flat LED wall, sometimes with an additional wild wall and ceiling piece - positioned around a vehicle on a studio floor. High-resolution content (the "plate") is played back on the wall at the correct exposure for the scene. The camera shoots through the windscreen, side windows, or rear glass, picking up the moving background as if the car were on location.
The key advantages over a traditional process trailer are significant: full lighting control, no weather dependency, no location permits, no dangerous tow vehicles, and the ability to place a car on a road that doesn't exist yet - or one that's on the other side of the world.

The standard car processing configuration is built around an 8 × 4m main LED wall, a 2.5 × 2.5m wild wall that can be repositioned for side-window coverage, and an optional ceiling LED piece for windscreen reflection passes. We also provide custom-designed processing volumes for larger vehicles, aircraft, spaceships, and trains.
The most common car processing configuration is the interior shot - camera mounted at the front of the vehicle shooting toward the back seat, or at the rear shooting forward. The main wall fills the front windscreen and provides the primary background. The wild wall covers the side window on one axis and can be repositioned between setups for the opposite eyeline.
The optional ceiling LED panel is particularly valuable for interior work: it bounces accurate, moving light into the windscreen and onto actors' faces, replacing the artificial practicals that would otherwise be needed on a process trailer.
For exterior body shots - where the camera is outside the vehicle shooting through glass or across the bodywork - the volume configuration shifts. The main wall provides the background horizon and environment, while the wild wall can be positioned to fill side-window reflections in the car's bodywork. This setup is especially effective for hero product shots and advertising content where the car itself needs to look immaculate against a cinematic environment.
The content that plays back on the LED wall - called the "plate" - is one of the most critical creative choices in any car VP shoot. There are three main approaches, each with distinct production implications.
For most UK commercial and broadcast productions, the plate choice comes down to budget and creative requirements. Stitched plates deliver the highest photorealism for real locations. Array plates unlock greater camera freedom on the day. Unreal Engine plates offer the most creative flexibility - and are the only viable option if you need a location that doesn't physically exist.
Control - Light that matches the world
The LED wall illuminates actors and car interiors with the actual colour and intensity of the plate environment. No separate lighting rigs trying to approximate a sunset that's already behind the camera.
Flexibility - Any road, anywhere
A motorway in Riyadh. A coastal B-road in Cornwall. A mountain pass in winter. If the plate exists - or can be built - the studio can become it.
Efficiency - Actors stay comfortable
No tow rig, no wind noise, no temperature extremes. Dialogue-heavy car scenes in particular benefit enormously from the controlled studio environment.
Sustainability - Fewer location days
Consolidating a car shoot into a studio volume removes location recces, travel, transport logistics, and the weather risk that inflates contingency budgets.
VP car processing works best when one or more of the following apply: location access is restricted or expensive; the shoot involves significant dialogue or performance requiring quiet and consistency; the brief calls for multiple environments in a single shoot day; the location doesn't exist or needs to be custom-designed; or production needs to control the time of day precisely across cutaways.
It is less suited to shots that require the car to actually move - wide-angle exteriors tracking a vehicle at speed, for example, remain more practical on location. VP excels in the shot types that make up the majority of car-based drama and advertising content: close interiors, driver POVs, passenger reactions, windscreen environments, and profile windows.
